Beautiful Sunset Apartments - Plat, Croatia *E

Beautiful Sunset Apartments is located in the small village of Plat, just a few kilometers from Dubrovnik. The apartments are immaculate, the location is stunning, overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the hosts Al (Alojzije) & Francesca are two of the most gracious and generous people you will ever meet. The views from all suites are spectacular and your away from the hustle & bustle of the city of Dubrovnik. There are beaches within walking distance.
If we were ever to return to Croatia again, this would be our first stop. Thank you for making our experience a memorable one. We have made two more great friends through our world travels!

Apartments Nives *VG

We were originally booked at Apartment Nives for 2 days but decided to double our stay the moment we arrived. The location is great, a little hard to find winding through the narrow streets of the village of Bibinje but well worth the trouble when you arrive at the beach front location. Nives is a wonderful host and went well beyond the call of duty to make our short stay a memorable one. The studio was tiny but well equipped and if you were in need of anything, you only had to ask and it was there.
We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Apartment Nives as a preferred accommodation.

Bed & Breakfast San Martino *E

Very seldom does the accommodation meet or exceed the material printed on the brochure or indicated on their website but upon our arrival at Bed & Breakfast San Martino, it beat all our expectations. This is definitely the nicest accommodation we have had since our arrival. Accommodation at Trieste this weekend was at a premium and very hard to come by but we were fortunate to book this place. Renato greeted us at the gate and showed us to our private parking stall. The place is absolutely immaculate, from the grounds and garden to the room itself. It almost appears that no one has ever stayed here before it is spotlessly clean. The room we have is very spacious with a private sitting area and very large bedroom, flat screen TV, wifi and breakfast. It is a 30 km drive from Trieste but well worth the drive.

Francka In Joze Gregorc *VG

Francka is the most pleasant pleasing person you will ever find. The apartment/B&B is in the center of the small, quaint village of Bohinjska Bela in Slovenia. If you looking for luxury, I doubt your going to find a lot in Slovenia but if you want to get the true flavour of living in a small, tight knit Slovenian community, this is your chance. The apartment is old and furnished rather rustic but you are visiting a country where material things mean little and few can afford. The place is very clean, very well priced and the breakfast was great! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would definitely return. Thank you Francka!

Domaine le Magnolia * (E)

This has to be one of the best B&B/apartments we have ever visited. The only thing better than the accommodations are the people who own it! Gerard & Irene are wonderful hosts and if you really want to experience the true flavour of France, this is a must stop. Not much English spoken in this historic little village but trust me, we had no problem communicating, even if it meant improvising with a bit of sign language and whatever else it took. We spent 3 days in the lovely studio suite which had two private baths, cooking facilities, a comfortable bed and most importantly, a washer. Laundry mats are not very popular in Europe and you soon discover how precious clean clothes can be. They also have a large pool that is very inviting during the hot summer days.
On the second evening of our stay, there was a big community celebration in the small village of 600 plus people. Our hosts kindly invited us to attend this special event which included dinner, wine and dancing. It was everything you would ever expect in the French culture and more. The people were so welcoming and friendly it made us feel very special.
Our stay at Domaine le Magnolia was fabulous and we would return here in a heart beat if we had the chance. Merci Gerard & Irene for making our experience so special.

Les Chambre du Mourillat * (VG)

Our first chambre in our European Adventure Part II was in the coast village of Teste de Buch in the Bay of Arcochon region. The B&B is run by the Daniel, Martine & Fabion Fabre at http://www.chambresdhotes.org/english/Detailed/18502.html . The family is exceptionally friendly, very helpful and their establishment is spotless. The rooms come fully equipped with a small flat screen TV, limited cable/satellite all in French of course and toiletries required for you stay. The breakfast typical french cusine or you can request a breakfast of your choice within reason. The family is their at your beckon call to make your stay an enjoyable experience.

Marriott Marbella Beach Resort * (E)

I tell everyone who cares to listen, The Marriott Marbella Resort in Marbella has got to be as close to Heaven as you'll get! The resort is stunning and the villa rooms are absolutely gorgeous, spacious & beautifully appointed with all the luxuries of home. Morton, the general manager went far beyond the call of duty to insure our 2 week stay would be a memorable one and that it was! Situated on the Costa Del Sol on the Spanish Riviera, you couldn't ask for a more romantic location. Calm quiet beaches with offered us quiet solace for our daily 3 hour strolls on the silty white sand and afternoons under a palapa gazing out at the endless aqua blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Radisson Gold Coast Resort * (VG)

Our stay at the Radisson was great! Gerard, Daniel and the rest of the staff really know the meaning of "customer service". Although we were in the timeshare section of the resort, the room was well appointed, although in need of some upgrading, however, Gerard did forewarn me of this. We got to know Andy, the gym manager and trainer quite well, a very personable fellow willing to offer suggestions on where and how to travel Australia, as well as the odd fitness tip!!
We enjoyed our first week so much we booked an additional week, hoping for some sunshine. The weather did break for a couple of days giving us some great pool days. We would definitely visit the Radisson again given the opportunity. Thanks to Gerard and the rest of the resort staff for making our stay one to remember!

Korora Bay Village Resort * (G)

We enjoyed our week at the Korora Bay Resort. I would rate the resort 3.5 star. The 2 bedroom units are spacious and well appointed. You are warned not to be alarmed if you find insects or sometimes even small animals in the room but this is the first time I killed two fairly large cock roaches in less than a week, one in the kitchen and another in the bedroom. This really freaked Leslie out, not to mention our pet gecko in the spare bedroom. I would suggest updating the tennis courts or removing them all together. They looked pretty gross!
The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We met some great Ozzie couples and even a couple from Summerland, only the second North American's we have encountered on our trip to date. There is a $10/wk charge for wireless internet that was pretty weak. Most of the guests had the same complaint but aside from that, it was fun!
We will be sad to leave our new found friends but Leslie will not be missing the cock roaches or our pet gecko.

New Zealand Lodging * (F)

Motels/Hotels in New Zealand are for the most part old, tired and overpriced! Some even advertise Sky Cable TV with 5 channels... WHOOOOOPPPEEEEE! The accomodation run by Kiwi's are spotlessly clean but very spartan. Everything is an extra. Continental breakfast with a few pieces of fruit, coffee or tea and maybe a cereal would run $12-15. Full breakfast, bacon, eggs and toast...$20-25. Condiments i.e. ketchup, mustard, etc. are $.50 a pkg. Internet is $5-10/hr, but McDonalds and the local library are free. We managed to find the odd place that offered free wireless internet but that is few and far between. The beds are old but comfortable. I do not even want to think how many or who has been sleeping in them. And all this at a starting price of $100-250/night. Similar in Canada or the U.S. would rent for $50. A 4 Star North American style hotel would range from $200 to whatever they can get! You just have to suck it up and except that this is the way of the world out here. This is the Achilles Motel in Christchurch, run by an Asian Family. I wouldn't let my dog sleep here! You can have all this for $110/night.
Achilles Motel Christchurch * (S.H.)![]() This place is an absolute dump, one of the worst we have stayed in 35 yrs. First time we use Wotif.com and from now on I will be using Tripadvisor with every booking. The moderate reports on this motel must have been written by the owner.

Comfort Inn Mediterranean, Kaikoura, New Zealand * (G)

Of course there is the odd exception like the Comfort Inn Mediterranean Motel in Kaikoura on the south island. The motel is run by Gus and his wife Larissa. It is modern, spotlessly clean and they offer free unlimited wireless internet. The price starts at $115/night but beats the competition hands down. Gus is a retired after 33 years with a large corporation and this is their retirement project. He knows what it takes to please the customer and is one of the few owners we have met thus far that truly appreciates your business.

I think this was a little harsh but it did make a few good points. The room was quite nice, flat screen tv, good bed and spotless. It is a very noisy place with heavy truck traffic starting at 5 am which makes it almost impossible to sleep. We paid $110 and in my opinion should be 1/2 that rate, but I am getting used to being ripped off in terms of hotels/motels. Breakfast for us was raison toast and a bowl of cereal.

Probably our best digs yet. Very nice, new hotel in the heart of Canberra. The rooms are very well appointed and spotless. Rates are normally around the $250/nt but Leslie scored a deal at $125.

Kurrara Guest House * (S.H.)

Booked this disaster on Wotif. The description on the web looked like a palace...NOT! When we arrived, the place was pitch black, no sign, streets were dark...it took us about 5-10 minutes to finally stumble into the place quite by accident. We pulled into a blackened parking lot at the rear of the building again in total darkeness. Went to the back door which was locked but had a small note pasted to the door, which of course we could not read. I tripped on a pot leading up to another door and luckily this door was unlocked. I was greated by a woman who was relieving her daughter. She did not know much about our booking but led us to a room she thought we booked. The room looked nothing like the description on Wotif and the $10 extra we paid for a flatscreen TV was a computer monitor that didn't work. I dread the thought if a fire ever broke out in this old delapitated building. The halls were dark and would be impossible to negotiate in the middle of the night.

Courtyard Marriott Sydney * (E)

This room was $300/nt during the week but we got a weekend rate of $125/nt. The room was beautiful but what else would you expect from Marriott. Spotless, great location, free parking on weekends and of course all the ammenities. The train station is 5 minutes up the street and you arrive at Circular Quay within 20 minutes.

Beach Port B&B, Port Macquarie, NSW * (E)

Great spot! Paul is a real character and the proud owner (with his wife Tricia) of this lovely little B&B just steps from the beach and rain forest. The rooms are spacious, spotless and very well appointed. They are not stingy with the breakfast items and continued to ask for requests if we were not satisfied with what they had to offer. Fresh squeezed orange juice every morning was the best! I have to thank Paul for going out and buying the largest flat screen he could find after reading one of my recent blogs. Thanks Paul!!! LOL!

The Riverside Inn, Moab, Utah *(P)

The positive Tripadvisor reviews must be written by the owner. If he is the Asian gentleman manning the reception desk, they definitely need a replacement that has a little personality. He has to be the rudest, most unaccommodating person I have ever encountered. The price was certainly right at almost 1/2 the price of everybody else in town but I guess you get what you pay for! The room looked pretty clean until you walk into the bathroom. The mirror had not been cleaned in who knows how long and had water spots all over it. The bath tub looked pretty gross and I would definitely limit usage to showers. The best thing about the room is the free wireless internet. The little fridge they offer was filthy.
Then next day we were checking out and I would assume we were dealing with the owner's wife. She was the coldest, most unfriendly person I have ever encountered. If this husband & wife combo keep up this bad attitude, bad service and bad accommodation, they will certainly drive most of their clientele to their competitors. I would strongly suggest they seek another line of work that doesn't include dealing with the public.
I would pay a few $$bucks more and look elsewhere.
