Dubrovnik has certainly been the highlight of our travels in Croatia. We have a very nice apartment that overlooks the Adriatic Sea about 20 minutes from the city center. We prefer staying on the outskirts to avoid the crowds and traffic. Once again we have made some new friends, the owners of the apartment Francesca & Alojzige (Always). Al is a doctor and his Francesca is a electrical engineer. The family fled their beautiful home after it was burned to the ground in the early 90's with their three children. The horrible conflict left many dead and this part of the country in ruins. His story was unimaginable and they both prefer not to dwell on the past but move forward and live for the future. They fled to Canada with nothing but the shirts on their back after being sponsored by friends from a local church in Toronto. They are forever grateful to Canada and the friends who possibly saved their lives. They moved their family back to Croatia in 1995 and rebuilt their home on the same property. They love Canadians!
Yesterday we went to the beach for a few hours before the scorching heat arrived. We waited til about 5 pm before heading to the old city of Dubrovnik. Nothing much new about this medieval city, the same vendors peddling their wares, 1000's of people, many from cruise ships that have become very popular in the area. We took our 200 photos of the same old stuff and headed back to the room after a quick grocery stop. Upon our arrival at the apartment Alojxige greeted us with an invitation to join them for a few glasses of wine and some Croation beer. What a way to end a beautiful day, watching the sun set over the Adriatic and drinking wine with our new found friends.
Today we are heading to the small country of Montenegro, approximately 20 minutes from hear. If we get back early enough we may hit the beach or relax on the the deck. We decided to extend our stay in Dubrovnik for a couple of days before heading to Sarajevo.
