The pool is still an empty hole and eye sore. At this point, we are doubtful it will be operational before we leave on November 1. Very disappointing!
A week has past since we arrived in Kelowna and moved into our new luxury rental condo. Once again, Leslie has worked her magic and has the place looking great! At first glance, we were both wondering how the hell we were going to fit all our "stuff" into a 650 square foot condo. She was not impressed and I don't blame her, 38 years of marriage and back where started in a 650 sq ft one bedroom apartment. Although the unit has all the bells and whistles, granite counters, stainless appliances, stunning views of the lake and valley, pool, tennis courts, I think we are both growing a little tired of the gypsie lifestyle. My best girl deserves the house of her dreams, something she can decorate to her liking and call her own. A little over 41/2 months and we will be on the road again with all our worldly possessions in storage for another year. Neither of us can remember what we really own anymore. After this stint, I think we will both be anxious to settle down and establish some roots.

As of July 1, we will have lived in Kelowna for 23 years, and rented for almost 21. Hard to believe coming from a contracter from Alberta. We did build our dream home in 2003 with the intention of spending the rest of our lives there but thanks to a neighbour from hell, we, along with three adjacent neighbours were forced to sell or live a life of grief for who knows how long. The house had everything we ever wanted in a home, a spectacular view of the city and lake, all the latest features you would expect from a Krahn built home and Leslie's amazing design and decorating skills made it the envy of every woman who walked through the front door. We waited almost 14 years for the right property to come along only to give it all up in less than a year. Now we are living in a rented 650 sq ft condo thanks to my buddy Larry. The condo is brand new with all the upgrades, granite counters, stainless appliances, hardwood & tile floors. The emenities were to include a large pool & hot tub (currently closed due to a geotechnical issue) , gym, 5000 sq ft club house, tennis courts, basketball court and basically everything you could ever want. We were quite surprised to see an empty pool when we arrived to sign the lease but Larry assured us the fix was under way and should be resolved within days. Not a bad way to spend the next 6 months as long as they get the pool working soon. I hope we wont be waiting another 14 years to find that perfect lot but we certainly do not see any eye catching realestate at this point, so who knows! So other than my bike suffering a little road rash, it seems to be working better than ever. A little tough love never hurt anyone. After closer examination, I noticed a cactus thorn stuck in the rear tire. I pulled out the thorn and within 15 seconds, the tire was completely flat! I have been carrying around a bottle of "Green Slime" for the past 5 years, hearing all sorts of rave reviews on the product but too lazy to let the air out of the tires and give it a shot. People in the desert have been using it in their tires for years and swear by it. Well better late than never! My tire was flat with a hole the size of the thorn I pulled out. I removed the valve stem, poured in a small amount of "Green Slime" and gave the tire a few spins, got out my electric pump and began to fill the tire. Initially, I could hear air coming from the tire but within a few seconds, the escaping air ceased and the tire began to fill to 55 psi. To my amazement, the Green Slime did the trick with little or no effort. I am a believer!!!!
May 31 was rather uneventful, up at 5:45 am, did a final inspection of the house to make sure everything was in order and hit the road by 7:15 am. The long drive to Pocatello, 860 miles, went by surprisingly quick, arriving at the Clarion Pocatello Inn at 9 pm. I called and spoke to Ashley, the desk manager twice over the previous two days to insure the King Room, NON SMOKING we requested would be available. She insured me it would be. I even went so far as to email the hotel manager, concerned about the reviews they received on Tripadvisor. To my surprise, as of today, I have yet to receive a response. When we went to check in the desk clerk confirmed our reservation for a Queen NON SMOKING room. I informed him that I called on two separate occasions and spoke to Ashley confirming a King Room. We ended up in a Queen room, which was somewhat dated and musty smelling like many accommodations we have booked into over the years. Choice Hotels are pretty predictably average and very hit and miss in most countries. When trying to book on Priceline, Hotwire, and Hotels.com, Pocatello had a maximum 2.5 star rating for all accommodations. Overall the stay was very average but did the trick!
The fun started on June 1, waking up at 7:30 am and on the road by 8:30. We set Garmin Nuvi Bee-ach to the fastest setting, Pocatello to Calgary. It took us off the I-15 on some convoluted route on and off smaller highways throughout the drive and never hit the I-15 again. This segment of the trip seemed to drag and go on forever. About 4 pm, we hit the beautiful metropolis of Browning, Montana. Browning is located on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and probably the dirtiest, town I have ever seen. You have to witness it to believe it. Very sad...drunken and disorderly natives hanging out at every turn. We had to gas up at the local gas station and we witnessed natives filling their vehicles that were so drunk they could barely stand up! I have to say we were somewhat intimidated and couldn't get out of town fast enough. It was Friday afternoon, June 1 and may have been welfare pay day, which probably explains some of the behaviour. The story really deteriorates from here and not 15 minutes from Browning, approaching Mary's Pass near Waterton Park, we hit the "Mother" of all potholes. I glanced in the rear view mirror a few minutes later and noticed my bike was no longer attached to our bike rack. I slammed on the brakes, ran to the rear of the vehicle and noticed the bike attached to the bike rack with a bungee cord, dragging on the asphalt. It's a miracle it wasn't in a million pieces and to our disbelief, there was no noticeable damage. After re-attaching everything to the rack, we are now running over 2 hours late for our arrival in Calgary. We stopped in Cardston, Alberta after crossing the Canadian border to email Ryan & Jenn, advising them of our late arrival and no sooner did Leslie get to the door of the tourist centre when the iPhone fell out of the case and on to the concrete, smashing the screen. When things go bad, they really go bad!! We arrived in Calgary at 8:45 pm with the realization, life is still pretty good and the day could have been a lot worse. |

I have always been a straight shooter and a go getter. Many have said Leslie must be a saint to have put up with me for over 40 years. We have been business partners since the day we got married and each played an intrigal roll in our business success. There is nothing more important to us than our Family & Friends. Our love of people and travel has allowed us to develop amazing friendships around the world. Archives
