We have read a lot about safety while travelling this region and therefore we are being extra cautious, maybe too cautious. They warn you to be cautious and not to flash the cash, cell phones or computers. Stories of express kidnappings have us on our guard but Im sure these incidents are very rare. Having said that, we will aways be on our guard. In terms of planning, we have the first 4 nights booked and will be winging it from there.
Air Canada flight number 8102, Calgary to Houston was great. Lots of leg space, free movies & TV, great service and on time. On the other hand, our connecting flight United Airlines 1035 from Houston to Quito was a bit of another story with leg space fit for a midget and the flight staff was not particularly friendly or accommodating. My legs were touching the seat in front of me and when I asked the flight attendant if I could move to the emergency exit seating, he informed me there was an extra charge even though the seats sat empty. The rear bathroom smelt worse than an outhouse and there was urine sprayed everywhere. Looks like the cleaning staff didn’t bother cleaning between flights. NOT IMPRESSED!! Wooe arrived at the airport at 11:40 pm, got our luggage, cleared customs and our shuttle driver Carlos was waiting at the terminal with sign in hand ready to drive us to our hotel. HE WAS GREAT! Arrived at the hotel at 1:45 am and finally got to bed at 2:30.
We spent the afternoon touring the historic center of Quito. Very interesting.
