Their sewage treatment plant I was right not to set my sights too high because Split was just much of the same and maybe even a little more disappointing. They have opened tacky tourist stores in some of the most sacred locations and if it were not so sad, it would be laughable. They truly do not realize what they have. The place is the mother load of history, some claiming the oldest of cities on record. It is absolutely crawling with people, snapping photos, eating gelato, buying stupid hats, etc. Honestly I couldn't wait to leave. One of the most gross and saddest incidents we have witnessed in our 40 years of travel was the walk we took to the harbour just outside the historic village. We both noticed a wafting of sewage in the air but that can be common in during the busy months of the summer, when the infrastructure can often be overloaded. As we approached the beautiful harbour, the stench became much stronger and when we looked over the rock wall along the gorgeous boardwalk, you could see raw sewage and shredded toilet paper for as far as the eye could see. We could not believe our eyes! This spectacle in some of the most pristine waters in the world and it appears to go unchecked according to this article. SAD!
